Now that dozens of professional athletes have had social media posts from several years ago come back to haunt them, it should be common practice for athletes to wipe their Twitter pages. At the very least, you would think those athletes—or the organizations that employe them—would take the ten seconds to perform a Twitter Advanced Search for offensive words.
It does not appear that the Dallas Cowboys or tight ends Dalton Schultz and Blake Jarwin performed such a search.
Both players have a history of using homophobic slurs in their tweets. Specifically, both have used “gay” in a derogatory manner on multiple occasions. As of this writing, all of the tweets presented below are still up.
These tweets will likely be deleted shortly after this is posted, but we’ll provide the screenshots here. The images speak for themselves, so I will present them below with minimal commentary.
Dalton Schultz
Schultz’s list of offensive tweets is a bit longer, so we’ll start with his. Schultz was drafted by the Cowboys in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft but is getting his first taste of extended playing time in 2020 due to fellow tight end Blake Jarwin’s season-ending ACL injury.
First up is this reply tweet from July of 2012:
Schultz is a gamer, and this reply appears to be a reference to the game Titanfall:
The @rt_gypsy account no longer exists, but this tweet to them is still there:
Schultz gets a little more creative with this slur, opting for the hashtag attack while sending a shoutout to @GilesChaz for apparently not bringing him somewhere.
And then to cap it all off, there is this picture and smiley face.
Blake Jarwin
Blake Jarwin is currently on injured reserve with a torn ACL, and we wish him a full and speedy recovery. He was expected to be the starting tight end for what should be one of the best offenses in the NFL this season, but his season ended with just one reception for 12 yards.
Unfortunately, he also has some troublesome tweets to his name.
Since these two were only a day apart, we’ll just keep them together. Here is a tweet to a girl who didn’t respond and a statement about Harry Potter:
There is a lot going on in the following exchange. According to context clues, this person is alone in bed at her mom’s place and tags Jarwin and someone named Calvin in a tweet with a “first buyers” hashtag? Jarwin’s reply is also confusing (in addition to being offensive):
This closing exchange is equally confusing, which is in part due to how confusing Twitter used to be before quote tweets and replies. Ah, the good old days.
Most of these tweets are from 6-8 years ago, so hopefully, Schultz and Jarwin have grown and evolved since then.
But it’s now time for them to remove these tweets and offer up sincere apologies to the LGBTQ community.
