The Eagles and tight end Dallas Goedert have agreed to terms on a four-year contract extension through 2025, the team announced Friday afternoon. NFL insider Mike Garafolo reports that the “deal ranks top three amongst tight ends on an average-per-year basis.”
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the deal is a “$59 million extension that includes $35.7 million guaranteed.”
The Eagles commit to Dallas Goedert
When the Eagles traded veteran tight end Zach Ertz to the Arizona Cardinals a few weeks ago, it became clear that the team hoped Dallas Goedert would be their tight end of the future. The problem, however, was that Goedert was also on the last year of his contract, as the Eagles moved up in the 2nd round of the 2018 NFL Draft to grab him.
In discussing the Ertz trade, Eagles general manager Howie Roseman essentially dared Dallas Goedert to earn a new contract.
When The Athletic’s Zach Berman asked Roseman about the compensation for Ertz now as compared to what it would have been back in the spring, the GM pivoted to talking about Goedert and the potential contract extension:
Not easy, not an easy day for any of us. But from our perspective, the opportunity to see [TE] Dallas [Goedert] and see Dallas in a larger role and obviously he’s a free agent.
And there’s no secret that that’s, obviously, something here going forward that we have to address. And so, getting him in a role where it’s not just sharing time and he’s the guy because in terms of our bargaining power, there’s going to be no discount on Dallas Goedert. So, we know that, so we want to get as much information and give him as much opportunity to take over that and see him in that role as much as possible, as opposed to guessing on it.
Now, the team has committed to Goedert for the long term. Their next big decision on offense, whether or not Jalen Hurts is the franchise quarterback they want to build around, may be more difficult to answer.
