Every Sunday, NFL teams release their list of inactive players roughly 90 minutes prior to kickoff. or the Eagles, we already knew that Alshon Jeffery, Derek Barnett, Javon Hargrave, and Miles Sanders will be out.
As of early Sunday morning, it still sounded like Lane Johnson was going to play. Unfortunately, that is not the case. Rookie fourth-round pick Jack Driscoll is starting at right tackle, while 2019 undrafted free agent Nate Herbig is starting at right guard. Matt Pryor is not starting, but I would not be surprised to see him in the lineup either as a sixth lineman or in relief of any of Driscoll, Herbig, or Peters (because of injury) at some point.
Here are the Eagles Week 1 inactives.
Eagles Week 1 Inactives
Miles Sanders
The Eagles ruled Miles Sanders out yesterday with the same hamstring issue that has limited him for the last few weeks. We had this to say at the time:
Replacing Miles Sanders
With Miles Sanders out and no one being promoted from the practice squad, that leaves Boston Scott, Corey Clement, and Jason Huntley as the only three running backs on the active roster. Clement has been with the team for multiple seasons, while Scott emerged as a reliable backup last season. Huntley was claimed off of waivers from the Lions a week ago and is unlikely to have a major role in the offense, but he could contribute right away on special teams.
It’s likely that Clement and Scott share the workload on Sunday, and it could be close to a 50-50 split. While Scott emerged last season, Clement has had success in the past and has reportedly looked healthier and more explosive than he has in years in training camp. Neither can replace Sanders, but the Eagles will mix and match.
Javon Hargrave
Hargrave was ruled out on Saturday. He hasn’t practiced in several weeks because of a pectoral injury.
Alshon Jeffery
We have known about this one for a while. Jeffery does not appear close to returning.
Derek Barnett
With Barnett out, Brandon Graham, Josh Sweat, and Vinny Curry will all definitely be active and see significant workloads in Week 1.
Lane Johnson
Earlier on Sunday morning, it sounded like Lane Johnson was going to play. The team apparently decided to hold him back and, presumably, protect him from himself.
Jalen Hurts
This one was a bit of a surprise. Many assumed that the Eagles would have some kind of package available for Hurts and might rotate him into the game in specific situations. Apparently, that will have to wait.
Casey Toohill
Toohill was a surprise standout in training camp and forced his way onto the roster. Unfortunately for him, he was not able to force his way onto the active roster for Week 1. The Eagles are dressing Brandon Graham, Josh Sweat, Vinny Curry, and Genard Avery at defensive end.
