Jalen Hurts wants to be a coffee bean

Don’t we all.

Jalen Hurts has quotes, people. The rookie quarterback spoke to the media on Wednesday afternoon and had some pretty entertaining things to say. When asked about offensive consultant Marty Mornhinweg, the rook described him as “the wise old owl.” And when Mike Kaye of NJ.com asked him on Wednesday how he is able to block out adversity and the outside noise and focus on the task at hand without getting rattled, Hurts said he is “trying to be a coffee bean.”

Yes, he said he is trying to be a coffee bean. That is not a typo. Here is a longer version of the coffee bean quote:

“The thing with me, I always try to never get too high, never get too low out there. Try to do my job to my best abilities. Doing that, impacting people, bringing people up around me. Always take somebody with you and create that camaraderie, that community. And all those things, all those characteristics, they’re contagious. Just trying to be a coffee bean.”

Perhaps the most interesting part about this quote is that it isn’t even the first time Hurts has said it. He used this analogy back in college, and he went into more detail about what it means:

“You know, I think you’ve got to try to be the coffee bean,” Hurts said. “Whenever I say coffee bean, you’ve got the carrot and the egg. You put an egg in boiling water, it hardens up. It doesn’t affect anything. The carrot softens up. The coffee bean spreads and gets stronger and impacts the people around you, you know? I’m trying to be that coffee bean.”

After helping the Eagles to a surprising upset win over the New Orleans Saints last week, Hurts is set to make his second NFL start against the Cardinals in Arizona this weekend. And with the Eagles starting an NFL record 13th different offensive line combination in their 14th game on Sunday, Hurts may once again have to rely on his legs to help brew up some offense for this team.
